The new year calls for new beginnings, and starting this month, AMA PDX is bringing its newest members to the spotlight.
This month’s AMA Member of the Month is Damian Foley, Assistant Director of Marketing Communications at the UO Alumni Association. Having joined AMA in December 2016, Damian is a newcomer to the PDX chapter. We conducted an interview with Damian to learn more about him and his marketing journey, interests and thoughts — read on to see his story!
- Why did you join AMA?
“ I joined AMA for the professional development opportunities, particularly to develop in the areas where I am relatively less experienced. I am a one person communications department at the University of Oregon Alumni Association, and my job duties include everything from publishing a bimonthly enewsletter, to managing our social media accounts, to creating promotional materials for – and serving as project manager for – more than 300 alumni events each year. I wear a lot of hats, and AMA programming helps me make sure they all fit comfortably, so to speak.”
- What’s your favorite thing about being part of the team?
“I’m new to AMA so this is a tough one to answer, but I’ve really gotten a lot out of the webinars so far – they’ve been tremendous, and I look forward to “attending” many more.”
- Why did you choose to get into marketing?
“It was never my intention to get into marketing – it just happened. I had grand designs on being a journalist, but after I graduated from college the first job I got was as a writer in my alma mater’s Office of Communications and University Relations. I loved working in higher education and using my writing skills to promote educational opportunities, so I never left the industry – I’ve been in higher education marketing in one form or another ever since.”
- What would your marketing “dream job” be?
“I’d like to manage the communications department for a disaster relief or refugee assistance nonprofit… or work with the United States Olympic Committee or (as a proud Kiwi) the New Zealand Olympic Committee.”
- What is your spirit animal?
“My spirit animal is a dog – loyal, and enthusiastically refusing to age gracefully.”
Welcome to the AMA family, Damian! Stay tuned for our next Member of the Month feature in March.
