Kent Lewis, MAX Awards Marketer of the Year, Shares Best Practices

AMA PDX recently interviewed Anvil Media and Formic Media’s Kent Lewis to find out what makes a MAX Awards “Marketer of the Year”. What did we learn? Never stop challenging yourself and building relationships! The future of marketing should take note and read on.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Seattle, WA.

How did you break into the marketing world?

After graduating with a degree in business with a marketing concentration from Western Washington University, I interviewed at a full service agency for an internship. I didn’t like the woman I met on the ad side as much as the folks I met on the public relations side, so I elected to start my career in PR. Two years later after moving to Portland, I transitioned into interactive and started optimizing websites.

Where do you currently work?

I’m currently President of Anvil Media and Formic Media, both of which I founded, in 2000 & 2008 respectively.

How did you become involved in AMA?

I believe I first attended an AMA event shortly after moving to Portland in the mid-90s, and have been asked to speak to the group on digital marketing topics half a dozen times since then.

Why are you passionate about marketing?

I’ve always enjoyed the challenges and joy associated with sales and marketing. Although I’ve had a sales role at agencies since 1996, I appreciate the challenges associated with marketing brands and products, particularly digital. Most of all, I enjoy helping grow businesses by connecting our clients with their customers, online.

What new digital marketing trends are you most excited about?

My hot buttons in terms of digital marketing trends currently include mobile and video marketing, big data, predictive analytics and sales and marketing automation.

What advice would you give up-and-coming marketing pros?

The best way to expedite your career is to do the following:

  • Never stop networking
  • Never stop reading and learning
  • Build your reputation by writing and speaking in your industry
  • Identify revenue streams in your company/industry and stay as close as possible to it (the money)
  • Continually challenge yourself and those around you to do it better, faster and cheaper
  • Don’t forget to take care of yourself: eat healthy, get enough sleep and exercise regularly
  • Measure and manage to goals that have meaning for you and your organization

Great advice! So when your not working at Anvil and Formic, helping folks network through pdxMindShare or speaking at events, what do you do for fun?

When not running two agencies or hanging with my family, I enjoy reading, cycling, snowboarding, as well as playing in and around oceans and sandy beaches.
