Nick Hayes has more than 20 years experience working in marketing for companies as large as Microsoft, IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems and Adobe to start-ups and niche players. In this time he has handled European media tours for Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Scott McNealy, Carly Fiorina and many others. Founder of two internationally successful technology PR and marketing communications firms, Nick saw that traditional PR was becoming commoditized, with clients simply trying to squeeze ever more coverage out of the same model of public relations.

October Luncheon
Influencing the Influencers
How to Kick-Start an Influencer Marketing Program Today
|
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
11:30am-1:00 p.m.
Benson Hotel in downtown Portland
Marketing is suffering from atrophy on two fronts. On the one hand, the effectiveness of traditional marketing techniques is declining, and on the other traditional marketplace authorities (journalists and industry analysts) are having less of an impact on buying decisions. None of which is helpful if you're in the business of marketing.
Join international marketing communications expert Nick Hayes as he discusses the latest trends in purchasing decision-making and explains why Influencer Marketing is now a "must" for almost any company. He will explore how Influencer Marketing differs from more traditional marketing activities and tell you how to use it to reawaken any CEO’s support for his or her marketing department.
Attendees at this one-of-a-kind presentation will come away with a clear understanding of:
- The undeniable benefits of Influencer Marketing
- How companies like Microsoft and Virgin Mobile are addressing these influencers
- How to identify the influencers relevant to your company
- The steps your company can immediately take to address the dramatically rising power of these influencers and positively impact your sales

President's Message
If you missed Gayle Lloyd’s presentation on how FedEx plans and implements its research strategy at the September luncheon or Herb Greenberg and Patrick Sweeney’s discussion about “How to Succeed on Your Own Terms” at the September professional development workshop, you missed a couple of great opportunities for professional and personal growth. What does membership, participation and partnership with AMA Oregon bring you? In September, AMA Oregon events gave you the chance to network with, get to know and be in front of more then 200 marketing professionals from Oregon, SW Washington and points beyond. (We even had two guests from London at the September professional development who came just to hear Herb and Patrick!)
Fifteen percent of AMA Oregon members are CEO’s, presidents or principals of their companies. Thirty percent are directors or vice presidents of sales or marketing and 25 percent are sales or marketing managers. We currently have 430 members with a goal of growing to 500 members this year. Typically our event attendees are about 60 pecent members and 40 percent non-members. What does all of this mean to you? If your company would like to get in front of a group of high-energy decision makers, AMA Oregon has sponsorship opportunities to fit every budget and we’d love to help your organization reach its goals. If you would like to get to know some very influential folks on a personal level, I invite you to share some of your time and energy with AMA Oregon and join one of our dynamite teams of volunteers. And if you have been procrastinating about joining AMA, now is the right time to make the commitment to your own professional and personal growth.
September was only the beginning of a record-setting year of AMA Oregon programs. Check out October’s schedule which includes a members-only networking event with the Portland Advertising Federation (PAF) and Public Relation Society of America (PRSA), excellent professional development workshop and luncheon programs and a membership info night.
I’d like to take a moment to give special thanks to two AMA Oregon board volunteers who have gone above and beyond this month. We had multiple website issues including a server crash that closed our website down for three days. Valerie Hoecke from Pop Art spent many hours of her own time recreating and rebuilding our site. Thank you, Valerie! (Currently, Valerie is in Taiwan participating in the dragon boat world championships!) A second Wrench of the Month award goes to Jennifer Gibbings of White Horse. Jennifer has taken the lead on a number of sponsorship issues and lined up print sponsors for most of our printing needs for the year – a Herculean task! Thank you, Jennifer! Please give Valerie and Jennifer high-fives next time you see them and thank them for all that they are doing for AMA Oregon.
Please drop me a note or give me a call if you have any questions or would like to chat – 503-546-9811 or Khohnbaum@PortlandTribune.com.

Raime Merriman
VTech Communications, Inc.
Marketing Communications Manager
AMA Member since: 2005
AMA Volunteer since: 2005
Raime signed on as an ad hoc volunteer to help with projects as they came up. During the spring she worked with Friends of the Children to help them develop promotional materials for their annual “Friendraiser” event (see "Friends" article below).
|
|
When asked what value she derives from volunteering with AMA, Raime says, “It gives me an opportunity to give back to the community through work with local charities, as well as a chance to continue to improve my skills and make additional contacts in the industry.”
When she is not working as the Marketing Manager for VTech or volunteering for AMA, Raime attends classes in the evening at Willamette University’s Portland campus where she is working toward earning an MBA. She also enjoys reading and attends a monthly book club. In the rest of her free time she is working with her partner to remodel their house—adding a master bath and walk-in.
THANK YOU Raime!

AMA Community Outreach is Making “Friends” |
AMA’s Community Outreach team works hard to fulfill its mission of supporting our local non-profit community. By aligning our partner non-profits with AMA marketing volunteers, we’ve had great success providing expertise and project support to our partners. And we’re ready to share our good news with a fun success story!
In March of this year, AMA partnered with Friends of the Children, a non-profit organization that pairs high-risk children with paid professional mentors who provide support and guidance for 12 years of each child’s life. Friends of the Children leadership asked for support for one of their major events, the Friendraiser. AMA gathered a group of volunteers to design the program that was handed out to each attendee.
Pat Van Orman-Price, Development Director, said about AMA's involvement, “If it weren’t for AMA and Raime Merriman (AMA lead volunteer, see volunteer of the month profile above), the event would not have been as successful as it was. Raime was integral—not just her design abilities with the collateral and written program, but for her overall marketing savvy. She was absolutely amazing!”
|
|
Like many non-profits, Friends of the Children works hard to control administrative costs —including marketing, advertising and creative fees—so that money raised goes straight to the mission. With AMA’s support, Friends of the Children incurred no expense for a very professional marketing deliverable—something the entire team is very, very proud of. In fact, the Friendraiser was a record-breaking event that raised $1 million.
Friends of the Children staff and AMA volunteers will be highlighted at the October Luncheon on October 10. Join us in recognizing the joint efforts of our successful partnership!
